Post Frame vs Stick Frame vs Engineered: Which One Is Right For Your Project?

If you’ve been researching a shop or ag building in Alberta or Saskatchewan, you’ve probably noticed something. Every builder you talk to says their type of frame is the best one. Post frame builders say post frame. Stick frame guys say stick frame. The engineered building company says engineered. Funny how that works.

We build all three, so we don’t have a side in that argument. Here’s how we actually think about which one fits which job.

Post frame

Post frame uses large wooden posts set in the ground (or on brackets above grade) as the main vertical structure, with girts spanning between them to hold the cladding. It’s the system you’ll see on most ag buildings and large rural shops across the Prairies.

When it makes sense:

  • Most rural shops, machine sheds, and ag buildings
  • Wide clear spans with no interior posts
  • Tall buildings with high ceilings
  • Faster builds with fewer trades involved
  • Budgets where every dollar counts

Where it gets less ideal:

  • Heated, residential-style spaces where wall depth matters for insulation
  • Sites with frost or moisture issues that need a foundation
  • Buildings that need to match a residential aesthetic

Post frame is usually the most cost-effective option for a typical shop, and on the Prairies that’s why it dominates. But cost-effective doesn’t automatically mean right. The next two have their place.

Stick frame

Stick frame is what most houses are built with. Vertical studs (typically 2×6 in our climate) sit on a foundation and form continuous walls, with the roof framed on top.

When it makes sense:

  • Heated, finished spaces that will be lived in or used like a house (shouses, suites above shops)
  • Buildings on a full foundation with basement or crawl space
  • When you want a deeper wall cavity for thicker insulation
  • Aesthetic-driven builds that need to match residential trim, siding, and windows

Where it gets less ideal:

  • Big clear-span ag buildings where the walls would need extensive support
  • Tight budgets where you don’t need the residential build standard
  • Projects on a tight timeline (more trades, more steps)

Stick frame costs more per square foot than post frame for the same enclosed space, but for the right project you’re paying for capabilities post frame can’t match.

Engineered

Engineered buildings cover a few different systems, but in our world this usually means buildings with engineered components like trusses, glulam beams, or HTS beams designed to spec for the specific load and span the project needs.

When it makes sense:

  • Long spans or unusual layouts that off-the-shelf trusses can’t handle
  • Commercial buildings with code requirements that need engineering stamps
  • Heavy snow loads or wind exposure beyond standard
  • Buildings where the structure is part of the design (exposed beams, vaulted ceilings)
  • Multi-use buildings combining shop, office, and living space

Where it gets less ideal:

  • Straightforward shops where standard post frame would do the job
  • Tight timelines (engineered components carry lead times)
  • Tight budgets without a clear reason for the engineering

Engineered builds carry a premium for the engineering and the components, but they unlock things the other two can’t do.

How to actually decide

Skip the brand loyalty. Here are the questions that matter:

  1. What’s the building for? Cold storage, heated shop, lived-in space, commercial?
  2. How big is the clear span you need?
  3. Will it be heated year-round?
  4. Are there code or engineering requirements driving the build?
  5. What’s the budget envelope?
  6. Are there site issues (frost, slope, water) we need to design around?

In our experience, the majority of rural shops in Alberta and Saskatchewan land on post frame because it fits the job. A meaningful chunk should be stick frame, usually when there’s a living or finished component. A smaller chunk need engineered because the span, the load, or the use case calls for it.

The wrong answer is picking the frame first and forcing the project to fit. The right answer is starting with the project and choosing the frame that serves it.
