What Size Shop Do You Actually Need? A Planning Guide

The most common regret we hear from shop owners isn’t about insulation, cost, or build quality. It’s about size. They built too small.

The reasons are predictable. The combine got bigger. The trailer got longer. The kids got into sleds and now there’s a side-by-side too. The workbench area that seemed huge five years ago is now jammed between two pieces of equipment with nowhere to actually stand and work.

A shop is a 30-year building. Here’s how to size one for the next 30, not the next 3.

Start with what you’re storing today

Pull out a tape measure and go around the yard. Measure everything that should fit inside:

  • The longest vehicle or trailer (with the hitch and any attachments)
  • The widest piece of equipment with mirrors or extensions out
  • The tallest piece (with antenna, exhaust, raised loader)
  • Anything seasonal that needs winter storage

Write the numbers down. The shop has to fit all of it with room to walk between and work around. A combine isn’t 14 feet wide. By the time you account for the header on a trailer beside it and someone walking around to grease a bearing, you need 20 feet of usable width for that one piece.

Add what you’ll own in 10 years

This is where most shop owners shortchange themselves. Equipment is getting bigger, not smaller. Newer trailers are longer. Newer tractors are taller and wider. If you’re planning to upgrade anything in the next decade, plan for the bigger version.

A common pattern we see: someone builds a shop sized for their current half-ton and 20-foot trailer, then five years later trades up to a one-ton dually and a 28-foot gooseneck and the new trailer doesn’t fit. The shop is functionally obsolete a decade into its life.

Add at least 4 to 6 feet to the length you think you need.

Door sizes matter more than wall length

A shop with the right size walls but the wrong size doors is still a shop you can’t use. Common door sizes and what they handle:

  • 12 feet wide by 12 feet tall: half-ton and small trailers, side-by-sides, most cars
  • 14 by 14: most one-ton trucks with standard trailers, ag tractors without raised loaders
  • 16 by 16: most pickup-and-gooseneck combinations, mid-size tractors with loaders
  • 18 by 18: larger ag equipment, combines with header off, taller commercial vehicles
  • 20 by 20 and up: combines with the header on, large commercial trucks, oversized loads

Most of the regret we see is on door height, not width. Width problems are obvious. Height problems sneak up on you the day you raise the loader.

Pick the door size for the biggest thing you’ll ever pull through it, then add a foot of clearance.

Don’t forget ceiling height

The interior height of the shop, called clear height, is the space from the floor to the bottom of the trusses or beams. If you have 18-foot tall doors, you need ceilings well above 18 feet for the door to actually open into the building.

A 16-foot clear height handles most home and small farm needs. 18 to 20 feet handles most full-time farm equipment. Anything taller is usually commercial or specialty use.

Higher ceilings cost a bit more per square foot to heat. But raising the ceiling later is impossible, and you’ll regret a low ceiling more than a propane bill.

Common Prairie shop sizes and what they fit

Quick reference based on what we build most:

  • 30 by 40, 14-foot walls. Acreage owner shop. One bay with a workbench, room for a truck, side-by-side, and tools.
  • 40 by 60, 16-foot walls. Working farm shop. Two bays, room for a tractor with loader, trailer, and a real work area.
  • 50 by 80, 18-foot walls. Larger farm operation. Combine fits, room to work on it indoors, parts room, office.
  • 60 by 100, 20-foot walls. Multi-purpose operation. Heated work area, cold storage section, mezzanine for office or parts.
  • 40 by 60 with a 20 by 60 lean-to. Common hybrid. Heated main shop with an attached cold-storage shed for trailers and seasonal equipment.

These are starting points, not fixed options. Every shop we build is sized to the project.

A few things people forget

Some practical items that affect size and don’t show up in the marketing brochures:

  • Where will you stand to work? Plan for at least 6 feet of clear work space around your main workbench, not just the bench itself.
  • Where will the heater go? If you’re using a ReflectoRay or any infrared heater, the layout affects where it can hang. Plan the heater into the building, not after.
  • Where do trucks turn around? A 30-foot wide shop with doors at one end means backing everything in. A drive-through shop with doors on both ends solves that problem but adds to the cost.
  • Storage for stuff that isn’t equipment. Shelving, parts, oil, chemical storage. Allow wall space for it.

The shop you build now should still be the right size in 2046. We’d rather quote a building that’s a bit bigger than you originally thought and have you thank us in 10 years than quote exactly what you asked for and watch you outgrow it.
